Digital Gold Market Set for Massive Growth Surge - digital gold
Digital gold market projected to reach $160-$170 billion by 2031, up from less than 1% of global physical investment gold.

The digital gold market is poised for significant growth, with projections indicating it could reach $160 billion to $170 billion by 2031. This growth comes as financial markets undergo a structural digital transformation, with tokenized investments gaining wider acceptance and creating new avenues for investors to access traditional assets.

Currently, digital gold—which includes vaulted digital gold and tokenized gold—represents less than 1% of the $13 trillion global physical investment gold market. Despite this, trading activity has seen a recent uptick, signaling potential for expansion. The WGC notes that this emerging category has yet to fully capitalize on the growing interest in tokenized assets, but the recent surge in trading activity suggests a changing market.

Digital Gold’s Growth Drivers: Trust, Access, and Pricing

The WGC report highlights four key factors that will determine digital gold’s future: trust, accessibility, product applications, and competitive pricing. These elements are critical for the asset class to move beyond its niche status. Trust, in particular, is shown as the foundation for investor confidence, with nearly four in five investors prioritizing it. Accessibility through mainstream financial platforms is another key factor, as evidenced by markets like India, China, and Indonesia, where integration into banking apps and payment services has significantly boosted adoption rates.

Tokenized gold has already demonstrated its potential, generating $90 billion in spot trading volumes in the first quarter of 2026, surpassing the entire volume of 2025. The broader digital gold market is now valued at an estimated $45 billion to $55 billion. This acceleration reflects the increasing acceptance of tokenized investments and the expanding opportunities for investors to engage with traditional assets in digital formats.

A survey of 12,000 retail investors and interviews with 20 industry experts reveal that nearly 90% of retail investors are open to investing in digital gold under the right conditions. However, the report estimates that addressing adoption barriers could unlock up to $700 billion in latent demand.

Overcoming Trust Barriers for Digital Gold Adoption

The ability to redeem digital holdings for physical gold and clear regulatory oversight are also key for building investor confidence. Evidence of product safety and legitimacy, along with transparent arrangements demonstrating that digital claims are backed by the underlying asset, are critical for supporting trust. Regulation and consumer protection further play a vital role in reducing uncertainty around ownership, custody, and redemption.

These regions have seen penetration rates up to seven times higher than markets without such integration. This highlights the importance of familiar financial channels in accelerating adoption and improving access to digital gold products.

Product utility is another driver, with investors expressing interest in features like yield generation through lending and using digital gold as collateral. However, pricing remains a critical factor, as uncompetitive pricing is a significant barrier to entry. While low prices alone are not a major motivator, an uncompetitive price point is the second most common barrier, emphasizing the need for digital gold products to remain competitive against alternatives like physical gold and gold-backed ETFs.

Digital Gold’s Potential to Attract New Investors

Digital gold has the potential to attract new investors rather than simply diverting funds from existing gold products. About 65% of estimated latent demand comes from individuals who have not previously invested in gold. Among existing gold investors, more than half of those willing to invest in digital gold said they would use money not currently allocated to the asset. This suggests that digital gold could expand the overall gold investment market by bringing in new participants and additional capital, rather than merely replacing investment in traditional gold products.

Younger investors are expected to play an important role in this expansion. Awareness of digital gold stands at 50% among investors aged 25 to 34, compared with 23% among those aged 55 and above. Younger investors are also twice as likely as older cohorts to say they would invest if barriers to entry were addressed.
